Who Pays for Car Accidents?: The Fault Versus No-Fault Insurance Debate (Controversies in Public Policy)

Who Pays for Car Accidents?: The Fault Versus No-Fault Insurance Debate (Controversies in Public Policy) Review

Who Pays for Car Accidents?: The Fault Versus No-Fault Insurance Debate (Controversies in Public Policy) Overview

In this volume two lawyers debate which kind of automobile insurance is the best, no-fault or tort liability. This text presents in one place all the legal, political, historical and financial arguments about the two types of auto insurance. Under the fault system currently used by 37 US states, tort law provides that the party at fault in the accident pays the full damages of accident victims. Phillips favours this system, arguing that it allows for fair compensation to the injured and deters drivers from dangerous behaviour on the road. Chippendale counters this claim with the argument that tort-law based insurance combines high cost and low benefits, and that those who truly profit from it are the lawyers representing injured clients, while their claims clog up the court system.

One Day Car Insurance Information Guide

Car insurance for a day

Getting an insurance coverage for a shorter duration ranging from one to twenty eight days is today made very easy. A typical insurance premium can be lowered and made cheaper if you go for a comprehensive one-day insurance coverage policy. This one-day coverage can be availed on a temporary additional vehicle, a courtesy car, a newly purchased car from an auction or car supermarket, an unaccompanied test-drive of a car where the garages insist on the insurance for the test drives on superior models of vehicles, or even on those taken for racing or track driving events.

One day car insurance

Under the above-mentioned circumstances, where the period for which the car is driven or the duration of the event are limited, going for a conventional annual insurance plan might turn out to be highly expensive. This is when many take advantage of the one-day insurance policies offered by the motor insurance companies. Though single day insurance was restricted to those in the auto trade during the initial days, today these policies are offered to the general public since 2005, even though it is still in the primary stage.

Single day car insurance

Single day car insurance policies are designed to meet the short-term and immediate requirements of the motorists in the UK. These insurance policies typically hold a coverage ranging from one to twenty eight days. Motor accident, fire, theft or other damages incurred on the vehicle, the legal obligations of these incidents and third party claims, if any, fall under the umbrella of the singe-day car insurance policies. Reading the terms and conditions related to these policies is inevitable to understand every underlying clause related to the coverage. A close scrutiny of the details might throw light over certain typical exclusions like:

1 Vehicles must be registered in Northern Ireland, Great Britain or Isle of Man and is not imported.

2 The current market value of the car falls under a price range of £25,000 and £40,000 with most limiting it to £25,000.

3 The vehicle must not function as a carrier of goods or used in public transport either on hire or reward like taxicabs or on private or public hire.

4 It does not cover hired vehicles.

Track day motor insurance

Track racing has been a craze amongst the English all through the times. Motoring enthusiasts enjoy participating in the thrill offered by the local race track by driving above the prescribed speed limits without the fear of prosecution. Today track racing days are one of the long awaited and favorite sports of the motor sport community.

But a typical insurance coverage does not offer protection against the damages incurred on the car during the racing events. Most of the insurance companies include an exclusion clause refusing to cover these events. Previously, some drivers took up the risk by not informing the insurance company about the upcoming event, thereby making the insurance policy held by them null and void. Any crash or accident incurred during the event was not compensated by the insurance company. But today there is a wide range of single day motor insurance policies that cover the risk of the racing events that can be availed for the duration of the race.

Day car insurance

In short, whether you are a motoring enthusiast, or need to drive on and off, today the insurance companies have policies to meet the demands put forward by you. Cheaper plans for a day can be availed instantly to suit your varying needs.

Car Insurance - How Did They Calculate That?

Insurance premiums are calculated according to several risk factors. These are the factors identified by the insurance company as most likely to have an impact on the insured against risk occurring. Insurance is a significant cost associated with the item insured and should not be rushed into. It is always a good idea to shop around for the best price available. Insurance premiums will vary considerably from insurer to insurer so do your homework.

Shop Around

Look up the various insurance companies you are interested in and ask them for a quote. They can usually give you a rough estimate fairly quickly and even more exact quotes should also be possible if you provide more details and wait. You should also look up insurers online and get instant quotes from their website. This is a very fast and effective way of shopping around. You will get a good idea of what prices to expect. You can also experiment with the quotation websites to see what effect it makes to your premium price if you select different options. With all insurance policies you will have a number of options that affect the price of the policy.

Therefore you should think about these options and if there are risks that you do not wish to cover then let the insurer know as your premium should become cheaper.

You should also try to make sure you do not double insure. It is a principle of insurance that you cannot benefit from the insured event's occurrence. So you cannot get paid twice even if you have two insurance policies. So if a risk is already covered by one policy, again let your insurer know so they can remove it from their calculation.

Factors

Car insurance premiums usually depend on factors such as what kind of car you are driving, how old it is, how big the engine is, what make and model it is? What type of insurance you require also plays a part, do you need only liability, or also comprehensive? What use you will make of the car, for example will you commute to work and how many miles do you plan on driving?

Your driving history will be a strong factor in determining your risk, and linked to this will be the age of the driver, with younger drivers being significantly more at risk of being involved in an accident. If you are young, your sex will also be an important risk factor, however if you are older sex usually becomes less significant.

Fatigue at the Wheel: Root of Serious Traffic Accidents

Last year in Germany, the police authorities reported a total of 3034 accidents triggered by fatigue, including 1786 collisions resulting in personal injury. This equates to about 0.5 percent of all serious accidents. Nonetheless, safety experts believe that the figure is much higher. This is because at the present time it is difficult to verify signs of fatigue by the time accidents are reconstructed.

Scientific studies revealed that between 10 and 20 percent of traffic accidents is caused by drowsiness. According to investigations conducted by insurance companies in said territory, 1 out of 4 fatal motorway accidents are caused by fatigue. Further, the probability of being killed in a road accident due to fatigue is 2.5 times higher than for other causes.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in the United States, over 100,000 accidents are caused by driver fatigue. Out of which, 1500 people are killed and 71,000 are injured.

In Canada, a study about fatigue at the wheel established that 1 out of 5 has at some time nodded off while driving. Finding also showed that two thirds of fatigue-induced accidents occur during nighttime. Majority of incidents occur in the early hours of the morning between 2 and 6. They can also occur in the middle of the afternoon.

Moreover, safety experts employed by automakers are concentrating on improving safety features of their lineup. According to automotive reports one of the major causes of serious traffic accidents is - over-fatigue. Moreover, safety experts are trying to develop a system that recognizes fatigue to warn the driver. This system will be integrated to automobiles to be accessible to drivers.

Engineers from the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre also conducted several studies and testing regarding this potent auto system. Said engineers have tested more than 200 motorists on motorways and in the driving simulator. This system is expected to be released in a few years' time.

In order to obtain objective indicators of fatigue, Mercedes safety experts employed electroencephalogram (EEG) and other physiological readings. Another method used is the analysis of dynamic driving data.

Mercedes assistance systems will be mated to Mercedes-Benz car parts to avoid real-life accident scenarios. Today, Mercedes safety systems like Electronic Stability Program and Brake Assist, have contributed significantly to the reduction of serious road accident.

According to studies, many motorists are actually able to recognize when they are tired, but by then it is often too late. Moreover, safety experts recommend that drivers should take a break when they are tired to avoid road accidents.
